Congenital Talipes Eqino Varus (CTEV/ Club foot) is a common congenital disorder in children with an incidence of one in one thousand live births. The disorder is bilateral in more than 50%
cases and may be associated with other VATER (Vertebral, Anal, Tracheo-oseophaeageal, Renal) and VACTREL (Vertebral, Anal, Cardiac, Tracheo-oseophaeageal, Renal) anomalies. When they are associated with anomalies like congenital knee dislocation, developmental dysplasia of hip, or Arthogyposis Multiplex Congenita they are called as syndromic and when they are associated with defects of the neural tube (Hydrocephalus, Spina Bifida, Meningcoel, Syringemyelocoel etc.) they are called neurogenic club foot. Majority of CTEV are Ideopathic and can be corrected by Ponseti’s method of treatment which incorporates a schedule of 5 to 6 manipulations and weekly casts, a tenotomy followed by the last casts for 3 weeks, a constant wearing of foot abduction brace for 3 months and finally wearing a night time
foot abduction bracing for 2-3 years in a walking child.
