This article aims at presenting the main ideias susteined by the philosopher, poet and german priest Johann Gottfried Herder and his contributions to historical knowledge. We attempt to emphasize the place from which he writes and his chief influences, along with debates with other philosophers such as Kant, Voltaire, Hammah e Goethe. Herder is considered by a great number of researchers as precursor to modern Historicism
