Objective; This descriptive research was carried out to determine the views of nursing senior students
about the nursing profession, their roles and the future of the profession.
Material and Method: The study was conducted at a district vocational school of health in Ayd?n
province, Turkey in the academic year 2018-2019 with 141 senior grade students of the Nursing
Department. A questionnaire asking about the students’ socio-demographic characteristics and their
opinions on the nursing profession was used to collect data. The data were analyzed using numbers,
percentage distribution and the chi-square test.
Results:. 19.9% of the participants reported that their ideal profession was nursing, 61.0% of them stated
that they chose the nursing department by willingly. While 84.4% of the participants expressed concern
about working life in the profession, 64.5% stated that they hoped that the working conditions would
improve in the future. 66.0% of the participants stated that nursing is indispensable for personal and
community health, 73.0% of them stated that it is a professional profession. Finally, 63.8% of the
participants stated that the image of the nursing profession is bad in society, and 45.4% stated that their
thoughts about nursing changed positively during nursing education.
Conclusion: It was determined in this study that a large proportion of students had chosen the profession
willingly, that ease of finding a job was a factor in their choice, that they thought working conditions in
the profession would improve in the future, and that their perceptions of the profession had changed for
the better during the course of their professional training.
