ERGONOMIC EVALUATION OF HAND-WEAVING CARPET PRODUCTION: PROTECTION OF WORKERS HEALTH

Hand weaving carpet production is a production activity, usually in bad conditions, in small-scale workshops and requires long-term static and repetitive work. It is a high- risk job that leads to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), such as inappropriate body posture, repetitive movements, contact stress and long working time. Unstable posture, repetitive and time-consuming static work in traditionally designed looms lead to increased musculoskeletal system disorders, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and reduced hand functions in carpet weaving. In Turkey, the hand-woven carpet production, health and environment problems caused by hardware-equipment used in weaving and direct efforts to ergonomic design. As in many industrialized countries, decision-makers and employees in the hand-made carpet industry are unaware that the development of ergonomics practices can help eliminate barriers and increase industrial productivity. In this literature study, the ergonomic problems that the carpet weavers faced were examined through the studies done in the world; a solution to prevent health problems caused by weaving and working environment in the direction of ergonomic studies has been discussed.
