Verde el-Yazj, who grew up in one of the leading famles of the literature and
sicence communtiy n Lebanon under Ottoman rule, had the privileges to be
considered lucky compared to other women not only in the Middle East but also in the world when the conditions of that perod were taken into consideration. Her father Nâs?f el-Yaziji gained an important place in the communty with his studies in literature and language and his activities in the Nahda Movement. Verde el-Yazj, who started writing poems at an early age thanks to the teachings of her father, revived the Arab poetry tradition in the same way as her father Nâs?f and brother Ibrahim. She encouraged and pioneered that a woman could succeed in the literary field. Verde al Yaziji, also known as an elegac poetess, is an important figure in terms of the subjects she dealt with in her poems and the way her poetry works differ from contemporary women poets. Unfortunately, the history of literature researches has ignored her work and contrbutons.
In ths artcle, t s amed to ntroduce the poet to those who are nterested n
Arab literature by presenting a few examples of poetry from her dwan after giving informaton about the envronment, life and literary personaltiy of Verde al-Yaziji, about whom very few resources are reached.
