Based on existing definition approaches this study aims an alternative definition of the equivalence concept with the widest possible range of boundaries between theory and practice. Here, the idea is to standardize the concept of equivalence in translation studies and to understand and define it as concretely as possible. The definition of the term intended in this study is a multidimensional definition that can be combined with different focuses depending on the translation situation. The aim of this study is also the detachment from the structuralist, partly even the functionalist theories in the direction of an approach that takes into account not only constants such as structure and function or target but also multidimensional variables such as subject, time and place. Aparticularly important role is assigned to the “translator” as a subject. This descriptive approach is intended to provide an alternative solution to the definition problem of the term equivalence in the framework of translation studies. In this study a new categorisation of five text-implicit or text-explicit equivalence dimensions is
given which can be combined with one another in different ways and thus represent a new equivalence combination for each translation situation. Text type / text convention, translation target, translation function, translation situation and translator will be the basic elements of this approach. The intended definition proposed should be include both the structure (text) and the function (translation situation) as well as the subject (translator) by means of a descriptive methodology.
