In this study we scrutinize the term “grotesque,” deployed as an artistic genre (a style by some) on the theoretical basis, in relation to the concepts of sublime and beauty within theboundaries of writing after touching briefly upon its definition in the theoretical plane. We try to define, on a limited scale, the grotesque in terms of genericity within the phenomenon of fashion discourse. Discussions have often taken place as to whether the grotesque is itself a genre or a/n literary/artistic style. Based on the definitions offered by varied theorists, we first characterize the grotesque as a genre, and, then, describe different roles of the grotesque in this article. In doing so, we must first state what we should understand the term “genre.” We can adapt the notion “metatextuality” proposed by this or that artistic style to the denominations, such as “metavestimentality” in terms of fashion or “metapictorialness” when it comes to painting. Here, we seek to delve into the appearance of the grotesque as a genre within the framework of sublime and beauty with limited consideration of fashion discourse and without attempting to analyze the conceptual collections of Alexander McQueen, which we sometimes refer to. Whether it is from literary or non-literary areas, the configurations of this or that type of discourse or the texts under consideration on the basis of metavestimentality and metatextuality enable them to better understand their own specificity and their original contributions in the face of other works. The study aims to provide methodological and conceptual clues so as to question the role the grotesque plays in an artistic work.
