The article systematizes an information about the puristic tendencies in the history
of the English standard language. The third part of the article describes the modern
attempts to revive the Old English lexical and derivational traditions, using the internet technologies. Further, the results of the study are summed up. In particular, it is analyzed why the puristic equivalents were not usually fixed in speech and to what consequences this had led to.
