This work aims to presente the selected articles to composse this dossier. We carry out a theoretical and historical review of the main aspects of the study of the urban in the Social Sciences, as well as its unfolding and production in Brasil. From the consideration of some academic contexts, the text converges to introduce in a general way how the urbanity or the urban life becomes object of independente study and own of the respective discipline área.
