OCCUPATIONAL-CAREER PERCEPTIONS AND PLANNING OF STUDENTS CHOOSING THE FIELD OF SCIENCE IN HIGH SCHOOLS

This study aims to determine the opinions of the students who prefer the field of science in high schools about their profession-career perceptions and planning. The qualitative research method and phenomenology design were used in the research. Data were obtained from purposeful samples to ensure maximum diversity. In order to collect the research data, a one-to-one interview form was applied to 33 students studying in two high schools in Araklı district center in the pension study halls of Araklı Mehmet Akif Ersoy Anatolian High School in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. The data were analyzed with the help of content analysis. The quality of their professions in their future lives and whether they are suitable for them is one of the most important factors in deciding whether students choose science in high schools. The positive or negative effects of families have a great impact on students' professional choices and career planning. In addition, in the environment where students live, in the country or in the world, the people who are modeled for certain careers or professions and the interest in branch courses related to the professions are important factors in students' career perception and planning. The most important problems faced by the students who choose the field of science during and after the field selection process are the difficulty of the courses and the continuity of study that is necessary for the successful continuation of the field. Some students encounter financial problems while planning their careers and have to postpone their career planning. The formation of a systematic project team and environment that can serve as a role model in friends and social circles or to carry out successful projects in cooperation plays an important role in the success of career planning. In this context, presenting the project work environments to such disadvantaged student groups in high schools in cooperation will contribute to the homogeneity of the scientific career among all students across the country.
