The need for information and data that man has had for decision making has been one of the main reasons why the registration and numerical monitoring of phenomena or social events has given vital importance to statistics as an undeniable support in the human activity. From this fact stands out the industrial revolution as a historical event characterized by great demand for data and constant information in the field of production. In the XXI century the information and knowledge society has increased the importance of statistics, we see how web platforms, the production processes of goods and services have been computerized, the rise of social networks, to name a few characteristic elements where society develops this century, represent niches that demand data and real, reliable and continuous statistical information. This essay is the product of a bibliographic review in which the historical evolution and importance of statistics in the social sciences is described in a synoptic way.
