Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of andrographolide reduction on streptozotocin (STZ) induced osmatic and oxidative stress in hepatic tissue in Sprague Dawley rats.Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided in to four groups, each contain eight rats, group-I serves as a normal control, group-II serves as STZ control and Group-III and IV STZ + treated with andrographolide 1.5mg and 2.5 mg/kg body weight administered respectively. Furthermore, we have been analyzed the anti oxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPX) activity and GSH, TBARS and protein carbonyl levels from hepatic tissues Results and Conclusion: Oral administration of andrographolide reduces the oxidative stress, hepatic marker enzymes in a dose dependent manner, In conclusion, the higher dose (2.5mg/kb body weight) of Andrographolide proved to be effective in reversing the streptozotocin induced alterations caused by oxidative and osmotic stress and ionic imbalances in the study. Andrographolide also proved to be effective in preventing the diabetic induced alterations in hepatic tissues.
