This article presents the philosophical concept of music elaborated by the Brethren of Purity in their “Epistle on Music”. The Brethren of Purity was a group of tenth-century Arab philosophers who lived in Basra (today’s Iraq). The “Epistle on Music” is the fifth part of their comprehensive encyclopedia containing fifty-two various epistles. Philosophy of music considered by the Brethren of Purity had been influenced by ancient Greek and Islamic philosophers. The “Epistle on Music” contains a wave theory of sound and an examination of versatile ways of psychological influence of music on human body and soul. The philosophy of music of the Brethren of Purity was developed by later Muslim philosophers and influenced the medieval Judaic philosophy of music.
