Kotas are a small group of primitive hill tribes occupying the higher altitude of the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu state, India. Studies have demonstrated that Sickle Cell anemia and Thalassemia is totally absent in this high altitude primitive tribal group. A Study was undertaken to appreciate the platelet profile and related RBC indices in Kota tribes. Venous blood was collected from 40 healthy volunteers aged between 20-40 years. The height- weight ratio, blood pressure and glucose were checked and found to be normal in the volunteers. Various platelet profiles like total platelet count, MPV, PDW, P-LCR, Pct and related red cell indices like total RBC, RDW-CV, RDW-SD and MCV were estimated. In Kotas MPV, RDW were found increased and MCV found decreased in approximately 37% of population. The RBC count, Platelet count and PDW found normal ruling out the absence of anemia, thromocytosis and thrombocytopenia. The decreased MCV and increased
MPV and RDW are assumed to be due to some abnormal hemoglobin variant or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
