Perceptions of teachers in evening schools in Greece

In a time of socioeconomic crisis, adult students have returned to evening schools, in order to complete their basic education, aiming to the social and economic improvement of their status. The purpose of this research is to identify the role of the teachers in evening schools. The method is qualitative and it is described as a case study. The sample of the research consisted of seven teachers of the public evening education, two principals, one elected employee and two school consultants. The data was collected via semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that the teachers of evening schools are sensitive towards the adult students and they obtain special skills through their experience in teaching adults. Additionally, they prefer a multidimensional and student-oriented role.
